"Get Involved!" --
By Ms. Sarah Ausec, Cho Dan
The phrase every Penn State freshman, including myself, has been hearing more than
any other the past few weeks or even months is most likely "Get involved." Now that
we are finally here at University Park and clubs are starting up for the fall semester,
these two words are being stressed even more. There are so many clubs and organizations
one can choose from. It's not hard to find a club, or clubs, that interest you. Even
if you have never participated in a certain activity before, if it sounds fun and interesting,
give it a try. Being in a club or on a team is a great way to relieve the stress and tension
of everyday student life. Everyone needs a break once in a while from classes, homework,
and studying for quizzes and exams.
The martial arts are excellent stress relievers. I have been training in the Korean martial
art of Tang Soo Do for seven years. I knew even before arriving here that I wanted to
continue my Tang Soo Do training through college. After searching through the various
martial arts clubs here at Penn State on the internet, I finally found the Penn State
Martial Arts Group.
While participating in the LEAP program this summer, I went to a few classes at the
Intramural building. I had a great time and a good workout at every class. All of the
other students were extremely friendly and helpful. I was not expecting the class to be
as structured as it was. I was used to very formal classes, and thought that the club was
simply going to be people who enjoyed the martial arts getting together and working out.
However, I am very pleased with the quality of the instruction and the intensity of the classes.
Starting something new can be intimidating at first, even if you've had experience in the area,
but the nervousness quickly fades away. It doesn't take long to feel like a part of the group.
I would encourage every freshman to join at least one club. The Penn State Martial Arts Group
is an enjoyable alternative to other more common forms of exercise.
